To remember passwords of all the services you’ve signed up with is indeed a demanding task. Even the best at the brain forgets the password anytime. And if you forget your password, you’ve to go through security questions, secondary email ID, birth date and so on.

But as always, Gmail has kicked off a new feature to recover your forgotten password via text message on your mobile phone handset. To turn this facility on for your account, Go to the password recovery options page and sign in with your username and password. Then enter your mobile phone number and click Save at the end of the page. There you are done…!!!

From now onwards, when you forget your password, enter your email ID at the password assistance page and Google will send you a recovery code.

Today while I was reading a newspaper in the morning, an advertisement caught my attention. To my surprise, I found that the advertisement was from the search engine giant Google. I have seen this kind of newspaper advertisement from Google for the first time. The advertisement mentions to search the internet before travelling in order to find the best deals for airfares and hotels.

Well, Can you understand why Google started advertise this way? I am also wondering. It may be ‘The Bing Effect.’

Gmail suggests recipients while composing email

While sending email to some of the friends, it generally happens that either you think much about whom to include from your long friend list or you mistakenly forget someone to include in a sending list. In this case, you would send the same email again to the persons who were missing earlier.

To overcome this situation, Gmail now offers you a Lab Feature named “Suggest more recipients”. Once you enable the feature from the Labs tab, you will see some suggested friends’ name that you might like to include while composing message. Gmail suggest you the names based on the group of people whom you email together and most often.

So if you are composing an email message for your family (say mom, dad, brother, sister), enter at least two names and Gmail will suggest you the other ones. Then click on the suggested names and they’ll be included in your sending list.

Insert Images Inside Your GMail Message

As days and weeks are passing, Gmail is growing rapidly. Gmail, which recently facilitated to change email language and display language, has come up with the functionality to insert image directly into email messages.

“Inserting images” is an optional feature and is not available by default inside your Gmail interface. To activate this feature, Go to the Labs (Settings > Labs) and enable “Inserting images” gadget.

As shown in the picture, click on the image icon to add images inside your email message.You can insert images from your computer hard drive as well as from web address (URL).This facility won’t show up in Plain Text mode and therefore make sure to be in Rich Formatting mode. To get rid of spam, Gmail will not show the URL based images directly. You’ll have to click “Display images below” to see the embedded images.

Imagine you are navigating through some odd streets of a foreign country without having a map or an iPhone. What you’ll do? All you need is a pair of shoes that have a built-in GPS navigation system. This shoes itself will direct you through the unknown roads and will help you to find your way. The shoes work by typing a postal code into the display on the tongue.

The left shoe contains the control unit which is accessible from under the tongue. You simply need to key in the starting and destination postcodes. At the tip of the each shoe, there’s an LED bubble which acts as a visual guide. As you can see in the screenshot, the LED bubble will show you the Left/Right/Up/Down way. Moreover, it sounds a loud alert beep if you’re heading in the wrong direction.

Google Suggest Launched Internationally

Till the date, if you were running out of the words to search something on Google, you didn’t have any solution (Unless you’re searching on Google.com). The solution to this problem has arrived now as Google announced the international launch of Google Suggest. Though it was launched on august 2008 for Google.com, It’s now globally available for different countries.

Google has made an attempt to offer suggestions that look familiar to the users. For this facility, Google has taken into account various cultural and local factors.

For example, look at the screenshot below:

In India, a search made with the words “no” leads mostly to “Nokia”. The reason why “Nokia” is the main suggestion is the emerging mobile phone market in India. But on Google.com, a search made with the words “no” leads to the different suggestions. Some of these kind of various suggestions are stated on Google Blog.

Gmail now facilitates to change your email language and display language

If you couldn’t send an email to the person because s/he doesn’t know the English language, google has come up to help you.

Google has rolled out the new feature that facilitates to type emails in Indian languages. If you are based in India, this feature is already enabled by default. If it’s not, Go to the “Language” section under the “Settings” tab.

When you compose a new mail in Gmail, you can see an icon in an Indian language as per the screenshot. You can simply the words they sound in English and it will be automatically converted to the equivalent Indian language. Currently Gmail supports the five Indian languages - Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.

As mentioned by the Google India Blog, this transliteration feature will also be available on Google India Labs, Orkut, Blogger and iGoogle. This feature is valuable to those who prefer to communicate in their native language.

Apart from this, the Gmail display is now available with many different languages. To change your display language, Go to the “Language” section under the “Settings” tab and change to your desired display language and save the changes. Once done, your Gmail interface will appear in the language you selected. Gmail’s display language won’t affect the language in which your emails are sent and received.

The following display languages are currently available in Gmail:

A Unique Identity Card for Each Indian Citizen

You may have heard about SSN (Social Security Number) in United States. SSN is a nine digit number that is issued to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The key purpose behind issuing the SSN is to track the individuals for taxation purpose.

India is now ready to take the same path. The giant project of providing Unique Identity (UID) to more than one billion citizens of India is geared up to be taken by the Government of India.

The two premier institutes of Ahmedabad,India, IIM-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and National Institute of Design-Ahmedabad (NID), remain as a heart of this project. IIM-A is a notable international school of management. NID is one of the internationally acclaimed institutes in the field of design and research. Mr.Rajanish Dass, professor at IIM-A is a mind behind rolling out this project. This initiative is based on Mr.Rajanish Dass’s research paper - Creation of a Single National ID: Challenges & Opportunities for India.

The Unique Identity Card is to be designed by NID and for that, it is already preparing the data collection form. As published by The Times of India, It took the three-member NID team of Pradyumna Vyas, Rupesh Vyas and Pradeep Nahar two years and fifty designs before they could finalise the winning combination, which aptly defined the purpose of the card.

“We had to be extra cautious since the visual elements had to integrate well with the security concerns and also appeal to the user — the Indian citizen,”

said an NID official.

The existing identification proof system in India contains documents like PAN (Permanent Account Number) Card, Driving Licence, Passport, Voter Card. They all serve differently and have limited purposes. Like, If you have to provide your residence address somewhere, PAN Card will not do your job because it doesn't reveal your address. Moreover, it generally applies only to taxpayers. A driving licence sometimes can't be your identity proof because it shows a very small sized photograph of the holder making it difficult to identify. A Voter Card only enlists the persons above the 18 years.

The I-Card will contain a unique number for each Indian citizen, a clear photograph and biometric data from birth to death. The main purpose behind this project is to reduce the identity related frauds, security issues and wastage of resources.

India based Rediff has come out with the new service called web-in-mail which refers the way web is read through email. This is a perfect solution for the people at places where they have no access to internet but are allowed to exchange emails. (Like Schools, Offices.)

"Web in mail" service will let you read full web pages just by sending some commands via email. You can also search for Google Web and Google Image through email.

All you need to do is

Send a blank email to browse@webinmail.com.

Insert a page URL (Web Address) as a subject.

A prompt reply will be received with the desired web page in the email.

Clicking a hyperlink within the received webpage automatically composes another mail. On sending this mail, another reply mail is received with a targetted webpage.

Movie 2012 Promotes Google Search in the Trailer

I just saw the promo of the movie ‘2012’, an upcoming film from the Sony Pictures. The movie trailer shows the message “Google Search: 2012” rather than promoting the official site of the movie.

Here, Good thing is that people don’t need to remember any web address for the film. But the problem is that the movie’s official site doesn’t seem to have made a place in top 10 Google search results.

Google introduces GMail Themes

Finally, an integral makeover for your GMail inbox has arrived.

Gone are the days when you have been using some extensions to spice up your GMail inbox. Earlier, Some Greasemonkey Scripts for GMail were hugely in demand. But today, Google announced that it will be rolling out 30 different themes for GMail.

As always, GMail introduces the new features in phases. So If you are lucky and encountering the GMail Themes for the first time, you will see the below notice at the top of your GMail page. It might take 2-3 days before this new feature rolled out to all GMail users.

Moreover, themes can be accessed directly via the ‘Themes’ tab under the settings menu.

Stated on the Official GMail Blog,

"We wanted to go beyond simple color customization, so out of the 30 odd themes we're launching today, there's a shiny theme with chrome styling, another one that turns your inbox into a retro notepad, nature themes that change scenery over time, weather driven themes that can rain on your mailbox, and fun characters to keep you in good company."

Google has also made some minor facelift to GMail’s default outlook. As a result, the default look now seems much cleaner and crisper. You always have the option to go back to the previous theme by selecting ‘Classic’ (Placed 2^nd) theme from the themes list.

In addition, Google help center lists some interesting information about the new themes.

“In some cases, you can also customize by location. Some themes change during the day, and we use the location information you provide to correctly time these changes with your local sunrise, sunset, and/or weather. If you select one of these themes, you'll see a Country/Region drop-down menu appear. Select the country you want, and then enter a city in the field provided. If you don't enter a city, or enter an invalid one, we'll set your location to the capital city of the country you selected. When you're done, click Save.”

Vodafone launches Voice SMS Service

Vodafone Essar, one of the India’s leading mobile service providers, commenced Voice SMS service for its subscribers in 16 circles across the country. The Voice SMS service of Vodafone is powered by Kirusa, who is the world’s leading vendor of Voice SMS Services and a leading developer of mobile value-added services.

As per the press release on the Kirusa website,

‘Fun and easy to use, this new service enables Vodafone subscribers to send Voice SMS messages to each other in their own voice, rather than by typing. Voice SMS is an enhanced mode of communication enriched with the sender’s voice, language and emotions, and offers complete flexibility in retrievals.’

With this service, any Vodafone subscriber, either prepaid or postpaid, can send a Voice SMS message to a mobile subscriber, anywhere in India, for a fixed price of Rs.0.75 (75 paise) per minute. The Vodafone subscriber has the options of sending, listening, replying, forwarding and saving the Voice SMS messages.

To send a Voice SMS

Dial * followed by the mobile number of the person to whom the message is to be sent.
After hearing the tone (Beep Sound), speak for 30 seconds and hang up the call to send your message.

To listen to a Voice SMS

If the recipient is a Vodafone subscriber, s/he’ll receive a text SMS notification and can dial *0* to listen to the Voice SMS. Old voice messages can be retrieved by dialing *1* .
If the recipient is not a Vodafone subscriber, s/he’ll receive a text SMS notification with an embedded DirectListen™ number which, when dialed, takes them to the message directly.

To reply to a Voice SMS

Press 1 to reply to the Voice SMS message.
You will be directed to record your reply.
After recording, disconnect the call to send your message.

To forward a Voice SMS

Press 4 to forward the Voice SMS message.
Enter the mobile number of the recipient.
To check and confirm your message, press 1.
To cancel the forwarding, press *.

To save a Voice SMS

After listening to a Voice SMS message, press 5.
Your message will be saved instantly and you’ll be notified for the same as well.
Up to 5 Voice SMS messages can be saved with this facility.

Listening to a Voice SMS for the first time (Once after receiving) is free of charge. But repeated retrieval of a Voice SMS will be charged at Rs. 0.75 (75 paise) per minute. Moreover, replying and forwarding a Voice SMS will also be charged same.

Some important information about the Voice SMS:

The capacity of a Voice SMS inbox is limited to 20 messages.
For that reason, after receiving the 21^st message, the oldest message will be deleted to allot a place to a new message.
At a particular point of time, a maximum of 5 messages can be saved.

Google launches Voice and Video Chat for GMail

‘Sometimes reading "lol" doesn't deliver the same punch as actually hearing your friend laugh at your jokes.’ Moreover, the Official Google Blog put in writing, ‘As webcams have become popular, more and more of us are realizing that video is the next best thing to an in-person conversation.’

You can now use voice and video chat facilities right inside your gmail account and that too for free ofcourse. All you need is a microphone, a webcam and Gmail voice and video chat plug-in. Gmail’s voice and video chat plugin works in Windows XP/Vista with Firefox 2.0+, Internet Explorer 6.0+, Safari 3.0+ and Google Chrome.

Gmail voice and video chat let users chat visually without requiring any external application or signing up for any other account. Users who don’t have a video camera can still make a voice call or can respond to a 1-way video call from a friend. Google also can help you buy a webcam. Link

Here, the major drawback is that after installing the plug-in, you’ll have to wait for your contacts to perform the same process of installing the plug-in.

‘If your friend doesn't have a camera next to their name in your chat list, you can invite them to download the Gmail voice and video chat plug-in from the Video & more menu in a chat window.’

To start the voice and video chat, follow the steps specified by the Official Google Blog,

‘Just click on the new "Video & more" menu in a Gmail chat window and select "Start video chat" or "Start voice chat." You can switch to a full screen view or pop out the chat window and change the size and positioning as you wish.’

Barack Obama’s giant sand sculpture took shape on the Barcelona beach

A Cuban born American artist named Jorge Rodriquez-Gerada, along with the volunteers, has made a really big head portrait of Barack Obama from sand and gravel at Barcelona-Spain beachfront.

The sculpture is about 445 feet long by 264 feet wide (139.28 by 82.67 meters) covering 2.5 acres (1 hectare) of the beachfront. The artist hopefully wants the artwork to be photographed by Google Earth. This giant sculpture has been created using 500 tons of sand, gravel and white, brown and black pebbles costing more than $13,000.

The artist informed The Daily Telegraph “I'm not campaigning for him (Barack Obama); I'm using his icon to represent the strength of expectation from people across the world who believe that a change in global politics is needed.”

As reported by the Associated Press, “This Obama portrait isn't the only outsized sand creation this election season. In India, an artist created a sand sculpture of both Obama and rival John McCain, with a U.S. flag and a likeness of the Capitol.”

Some tricks with the name Obama :

(1) The name ‘Obama’ is a serious business
Go to the eBay USA website. In the search bar, type ‘obama’ as shown in the image. Check out some auto generated suggestions. You can realize that the above statement is deserved to be right.

(2) 'Obama' is a grammatical error in Microsoft Word 2003
Although this trick is just a simple fun, it can create some humor. I am using Microsoft Word 2003 (Part of Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003) and this trick works fine in it. I am not sure about the other versions of Microsoft Office.

Open a blank word document and type the word ‘Obama’ and leave a space. You’ll immediately notice a red line below the word stating a grammatical error. Now right click the word and see the first suggestion from the word dictionary. It’s ‘Osama’.

The cell phone giant Nokia has launched its smallest Bluetooth headset to the date, the Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-804. This new headset is compact sized (42 x 13.6 x 6 mm), lightweight (7.2 grams) with a genuine aluminum case and slim lines.

Community Recommendation - A new feature in Orkut

It seems that Google is constantly implementing new features in Orkut. Recently, they released Profile Themes for all their users. Before sometime, they did introduce Applications.

Now, they have launched a very useful utility of Recommending a Community. On the right hand side of your Orkut Profile, you can see your friends and the communities you are member of. Just between Friends and Communities list, you can see a panel named Community Recommendation. This panel shows the communities related to your interests.

As you can see, I am from Ahmedabad and having keen interest in stock market, investing etc, I am getting some very similar recommendations. Moreover, when you open your communities list from the top navigation bar, it shows the list of all recommendations.

You certainly have an option to turn this feature off.
